Vransko Lake Nature Park includes Vransko Lake with its surroundings
Vransko Lake is the largest natural lake in Croatia. It is a cryptodepression in a karst filled with slightly salty water. The lake surface is 2 meters above sea level, while the bottom is 4 meters below sea level. Out of the total area of 57 km2 (3002 ha), only the lake occupies about 30.16 km2. It stretches in the northwest-southeast direction and is about 13.6 km long and 1.4 to 3.4 km wide. Vransko Lake is on the list of world-famous wetlands, as the largest natural, sparkling, ever-flowing water body in Croatia. Around the entire Vransko Lake passes the cycling trail. The bicycle trail is a favorite destination for walking, recreational running and cycling.
The dominant feature of the Park is the ornithological reserve which, due to its preservation of the large tributaries of the SO part of the lake as a rare swamp system, great biodiversity, exceptional scientific and ecological values, has been granted this status in 1983 and is included in a list of important ornithological areas in Europe.
It is necessary to purchase a fishing license for sport fishing at Vrana Lake. An annual fishing permit is issued to Croatian and foreign nationals, upon presentation of a certificate on the passed fishery exam, while no license for a given fishery exam is required for the issuance of a daily permit.
